Tiger Woods Responds To Sergio Garcia ‘Fried Chicken’ Remark: Words Were Hurtful’

If the Tiger Woods vs. Sergio Garcia feud is indeed over, it ended the way that many feuds do: passive-aggressive sniping turns into more heated words, and then one party clearly goes over the line and says or does something wildly inappropriate, causing both sides to retreat. If you've ever been in a serious relationship, you know exactly what I mean.

Happens on the golf course as well. The Woods-Garcia spat, chronicled here, came to a head on Tuesday when Garcia made an ill-advised reference to fried chicken while talking about a pretend dinner with Tiger. Since Fuzzy Zoeller plumbed those racist depths previously, in 1997, no one was in the mood for it again.

On Tuesday at the European Tour Awards Dinner in London, Garcia was asked about his feud with Woods, and if he would ever invite him to dinner. Garcia:

Woods responded today via Twitter, saying that Garcia's quote was "wrong" and "hurtful" and that it may be time to "move on."

"I want to apologize to Tiger and anybody that I could have offended," Garcia said. "I feel sick about it. I'm truly, truly sorry. And I hope we can kind of settle things down and hopefully move on."

"It wasn't meant that way," Garcia said. "I was caught off guard. What seemed to be a funny question, and I tried to give a funny answer. It came out totally wrong. I want to make sure everybody knows I'm very, very sorry. I can't apologize enough times.

"As soon as I left the dinner, I started getting a sick feeling in my body. I didn't really sleep at all. I felt like my heart was going to come out of my body. I've had this sick feeling all day. Difficult to hit a shot all day."

Garcia said he reached out to Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, who missed the call but acknowledged receiving it. "I would love to talk to him [Woods] as soon as possible and make sure everything is OK," Garcia said.

We could say that Sergio Garcia is from Spain, and athletes from that country have a poor track record when it comes to making racist comments and gestures. But we won't go there at this time.
