UEFA Europa League 2013: The next round cant come quickly ...
There are some good ties remaining in the UEFA Europa League's Round of 32, but they are not numerous. Most ties are already sorted.
The next round of the UEFA Europa League is probably going to be very good. There are no true duds left in the competition, and there are no heavy favorites who are on the ropes in their current tie. There's every reason to expect five or six extremely close ties out of the eight when the Round of 16 rolls around. And it can't come soon enough, because this round hasn't been terribly interesting.
A few of the 16 ties in the first knockout round are still in question, but most are not. Chelsea, Inter Milan, Benfica and Ajax are among the big sides who would have to fall apart to avoid going through. Zenit are very much in control against Liverpool, while there's not much reason to believe that Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Olympiakos or Napoli could fight their way back into their tie.
However, some ties are worth watching. Newcastle head to Kharkiv having failed to win at home, but also having managed to deny Metalist an away goal. They'll like their chances to go through. Tottenham lead Lyon by one goal, but also gave up an away goal at White Hart Lane. Three more ties also resulted in first leg draws, so there are five very competitive ties worth keeping an eye on.

It was far from easy, but Barcelona put an end to a mini-streak of two league matches without wins on a road with a Messi-inspired 2-1 win at Granada, secured deep into the second half. The Argentine broke the 300-goal mark at the club and carried the team to yet another win in their quest for the league title. Here are the ratings for last night's match:
Blameless in the Granada goal and had some very nice saves, including a crucial one in the dying minutes to prevent Granada's equalizer.
Had to leave in the first half due to yet another injury, but was getting exposed by the Granada attackers time and again before that, never looked calm and assured at all in this match.
Struggled a bit with the pace of Granada's forwards at first, but was mostly solid overall and improved as the match went on.
Always alert and barely put a foot wrong, averting some potentially dangerous situations with efficient defensive plays.
Extremely active and dangerous on the attacking end of the pitch, but his final ball wasn't always the best. Still an excellent outlet down the right flank, combining brilliantly with Messi and co. as usual up front.
Broke up play countless times, avoiding potentially dangerous counterattacks, and was competent, even if not as dynamic as usual, in his distribution in midfield.
Showed great passing and skills in this match, but still lacks the metronomic consistency of Xavi to lead the midfield.
Not as involved in the match as he'd have liked but dangerous in the rare occasions he was. Bizarrely, his shot ended up being an assist to Messi's equalizer.
Not brilliant, but as relentless in his off the ball work as ever, thus creating space for his teammates to shine. Was quite unlucky not to score as his shot hit the post.
A performance to forget in every way; he put an end to the team's moves more often than he created anything even remotely dangerous. Was replaced in the second half.

But despite the opening spell looking like the prelude to a comprehensive United victory, the tide turned a little after a collision between Noel Hunt and Nemanja Vidic, which saw both temporarily removed from the field for treatment and the former leaking blood all over himself for most of the rest of the match. Reading were able to assert themselves and managed to trouble David de Gea several times through set pieces.
The hosts weren't looking particularly adventurous, but they still came very close to taking the lead when Adam Federici parried Tom Cleverley's long-range drive straight into the path of an unmarked Ashley Young, who was presented with an easy finish into a more or less unguarded net. Instead of taking it, he shot straight at the goalkeeper, who was able to shove his effort wide.
There was bad news on the injury front for United as well. Phil Jones went in late and off-balance on an attempted tackle of Jobi McAnuff, and ended up jarring his ankle so badly that the right back was forced off the pitch, replaced by Nani as Valencia dropped back into the defence. Nani made an immediate impact, crashing a volley off the base of Federici's far post within minutes of his introduction.
Better was to come, but it would take until the second half to do so. Just after the hour mark, Valencia was able to find Nani in the box as the Reading defence went missing, and the winger dispatched his effort past Federici to give United a vital lead.
Although the visitors responded well, with Adam le Fondre forcing de Gea into a superb stop after a twisting snapshot, Chicharito would double United's tally mere minutes thereafter. This time, Nani turned provider, whipping in a cross from the right with the Mexican got a head to, leaving Federici with no chance.
Again, Reading looked for a reply and this time they got it. Chris Smalling managed to intercept a dangerous looking pass intended for le Fondre, but he didn't do well enough when he tried to knock the delivery to safety. Instead, he simply presented possession to McAnuff, who slotted home coolly from close range to make it 2-1 in the 81st minute.
The visitors flooded forward in search of the equaliser, leaving the last ten minutes of match incredibly open. United had their chances to make it 3-1, but ultimately didn't need to worry about wasting them -- although their defending left rather a lot to be desired. After four minutes of somewhat-panicked injury time, Reading were defeated, and now a probable quarterfinal date with Chelsea awaits.
